Professor for Next Generation Photovoltaics at KIT
Role in Solar TAP:
Principal Investigator
Research Institution:
Light Technology Institute, Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT)
Introduction
Ulrich W. Paetzold is a Full Professor for Next Generation Photovoltaics at Karlsruhe Institute of Technology. He was a doctoral student at Forschungszentrum Jülich and received his PhD in physics from RWTH Aachen University in 2013, then continued as a postdoc at imec in Leuven. In 2016, he was awarded an independent research group at Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT). He is particularly interested in unfolding the potential of next generation photovoltaic technologies by research, innovation, and academic education.
The research team of Ulrich W. Paetzold is focused on the fabrication, upscaling, characterization, and understanding of device physics of perovskite photovoltaics and perovskite-based tandem photovoltaics. In 2023, Ulrich W. Paetzold was awarded the prestigious ERC Consolidator Grand by the European Union. In the next five years, it is his ambition to advance the stability and scalability of these technologies and increase the power conversion efficiency of perovskite-based tandem solar cells from today’s record values above 35%.
Solar TAP Project
Contribution to Solar TAP:
Ulrich W. Paetzold and his team will engage Solar TAP with their expertise and competence in the field of perovskite photovoltaics and energy yield modelling.
Uniqueness of Solar TAP:
Fostering transfer with full competence and expertise of Helmholtz will certainly seed many new innovations for PV in Germany, Europe and beyond.
