Next-generation greenhouses boost plant growth
Greenhouse project with Lambda Agri
Researchers at the Light Management Lab at KIT have a long tradition of working on spectral conversion technologies – simply put, passive layers that absorb light at one wavelength and emit it at another. This is achieved by using luminescent materials, typically embedded in a thin polymer layer.
These coatings are designed to absorb unutilized ultraviolet light and emit these photons in the red region of the visible spectrum. Studies show that red light (especially when combined with blue light) optimizes photosynthetic efficiency, leading to higher biomass accumulation and better crop yields.
Together with Lambda Agri Ltd., the universities of Bath and Cambridge, and KIT researchers of Solar TAP coatings that can be sprayed onto existing glass greenhouses were developed, enhancing crop yield.

Project details
Key Achievements
- Spectral conversion layers that can be applied greenhouses for boosting plant growth, e.g. a 9.3% enhancement in the growth of basil leaves was measured.
- Demonstration of increased biomass generation due to the coating.
Linking Science and Industry
By combining the know-how of the Solar TAP Light Management Lab – in particular with regard to the synthesis and characterization of spectral conversion materials – with the entrepreneurial spirit of the Lambda Agri team the company has made great advances with developing their product. Access to advanced optical characterization infrastructure enabled Lambda Agri to refine its processes and develop a higher performing product.
Future Outlook
Quantitative evaluation of crop growth enhancement for various crops. Tailored illumination spectra for different types of crops.
